Isle of Palms is a busier town in the warmer months of the year, as it is a favorite among tourists. Here, you’ll find a fun and welcoming atmosphere alongside gift shops, beachfront hotels and vacation rentals, and bars and restaurants with views of the ocean. Sullivan’s Island has a much more serene and private vibe and is mostly visited by locals. Some of the Charleston area’s highest-rated restaurants can be found along Middle Street.

Whether residing on Isle of Palms or Sullivan’s Island, marvelous dining options surround you. From casual beachside experiences to fine dining, you can enjoy a myriad of settings.

On Sullivan’s Island, Middle Street is home to all of the town’s restaurants. If you ask any local, The Obstinate Daughter is one of the best restaurants in the entire Charleston area. Place your reservation well in advance for this eclectic coastal-themed establishment. Popular dishes include The Old Danger pizza (topped with pancetta, scallions, and a sunny-side-up egg), Frogmore Chowder, and any handcrafted pasta dish. A few minutes down the road, the Edgar Allen Poe-themed Poe’s Tavern also delivers a one-of-a-kind experience.

Traveling over to Isle of Palms, good times await at the many bars and restaurants found in town. For an exceptional southern meal, Acme Lowcountry Kitchen is the place to go. If you’re in search of a fun afternoon of drinks and ocean views, Coconut Joe's Beach Grill and The Windjammer are top choices.

Things to Do

Thanks to the area’s warm year-round climate, there are always fun ways to spend your leisure time on Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island.

As coastal communities, the most popular thing to do in both towns is to relax at the beach. On Isle of Palms, there is public beach access along Ocean Boulevard. If you’re looking for a more robust experience, head to Isle of Palms County Park. For a reasonable fee, this park provides effortless parking (which is especially valuable during the summer months), lifeguards, a dressing area, beach and boardwalk access, a playground, sand volleyball courts, and more. If you’re heading to the beach on Sullivan’s Island, there are plenty of public access points — referred to as “stations.” Locals tip: Make sure to catch at least one sunset while at this beach.

Seeking a tranquil day of golf at one of the area’s premier resorts? The Wild Dunes Resort provides access to awe-inspiring courses that are situated along the ocean. Nearby, take your boat or yacht out on the water at the Isle of Palms Marina.
